Hi Fred,
I felt like hitting a grand slam when I got this pic. They are among the most colorful birds in the state and definitely one of my favorites. I am glad you like it.
There are very good chances to find these guys in Montebello Open Space Preserve.
They are very territorial and particularly active during their breeding season around May- June.
Unfortunately a few days ago, 13 acres of the area were they were nesting was burned to provide training to firefighters controlling forest fires. I haven’t been there since them. I only hope that not all of them were nesting in that field.

Yamil: Lovely, lovely! We saw a lot of these in southeastern Arizona in April. I couldn't get a shot as nice as this, however.

Yamil: Gorgeous capture. We get these in summer but they go up high in the mountains and scatter. Thank you for your gracious comments on my Eared Grebe. I need to talk to you about appropriate rainwear for our trip to Costa Rica in September. I am now taking a 1D MKIII and a 400 f/5.6 on the trip.
