Aw, Paul. You're too nice. I was mostly kidding. I used those shop lights to shoot this small animated film I made (four hours yields 17 seconds):

It was educational to say the least.
The lighting worked out pretty well. I used about 1/4 of the lumination available to me from the lamps. They are pretty useful for the photographer on the cheap (I think I paid $50 for them and I use them to saw up wood all the time).
But, in my work, a dark room has its obvious advantages. No, not groping the models. Sheesh.

You're an MM model? PLEASE don't show me those bikini shots, Martin.

Good enough? I can't say, as that depends on your technique. Better? better than a table lamp, absolutely! One of the softest lights sources you could ever use is right next to you: a white wall.
Point the halogen at the wall, and have the model move in to within 4 to 5 feet, and see the amazing softness you can attain with one light.
If you need a more directional light with deep shadows, try diffusing the shop light through a sheet wrapped around a PVC frame.
Hope this helps,
Paul

A classic and done well under your direction. Fan?
I have some halogen lights I picked up Home Depot. Is that good enough?

Thanks, Rona! I was using an Alien Bee 400 strobe with a Brolly Box (which is a shoot-thru umbrella with a black cloth at the back to kill any spill). The key light was up close - about 3 feet away, and I had another AB400 9 feet up behind her to give some highlights in her hair. I also had a reflector on a stand just off frame to her left, to bounce in some fill from the key light.
When you say 'lamps', do you mean quartz shop lights?
