You could ask her to stand still. Good luck at that. Maybe you could incorporate a bit of blur in the photo, because non-stop motion is a strong characteristic of the age Lillie appears to be at. I like this photo, by the way. The tones of Lillie's skin and hair, and the blue of her dress match very well the colors and tones of her surroundings. Steve

Jessie: Real quick. Shutter priority mode, wheel on right hand, watch light meter with shutter pushed half-way down and try to use the wheel to get the light bar centered. The wheel is what changes the shutter speed. The light bar all the way one way will make a white square, the other way makes a black square. Center it. Play around, the film is cheap enough! LoL! Maybe google and find an online version of the manual?
Good Luck!

when i put it on shutter-priority mode, i ALWAYS get a black photo. nothing, no light, anything. so i skip it. i should learn more and fix it...

Hi Jessie . . . Boy they grow up Sooooo fast! Still a cutie daredevil though . . . and not likely to outgrow it I guess!
As to your question . . . I have a couple of thoughts on how you might make it easier. The 18-200 VR is a really (REALLY) good lens! It's also going to be helping you with your problem in capturing Lillie.
When you have a contemplative shot, like the one I love with her in the museum . . . or a sleeping child . . . or no motion issues, I would recommend the apperture priority and cut down on the DOF to pleasingly blur the BG and soften the image (like a lot of children's portraits).
Not having a D80 . . . but knowing more than a few Nikons . . . I think you'll find that action shots are likely better in Program or shutter priority mode. As I recall, there's even a customized Program mode for that camera . . . but the faster shutter speed will stop blur and sharpen images. The reason I was thinking Program mode is it is relatively easy to adjust to a quicker shutter speed and the camera would (I think) adjust your F/stop accordingly.
Check your book (I know . . . what a bore, I'm going to have to read mine too) and check on custom Program . . . the key is a faster shutter for action (generally speaking) and take some test shots!! :)
Hope that helps!

This one looks great in colour Jessie!
It's the fact that the colours go so well together. They are nice and rich. Beautiful and clear on the charming subject matter. The DOF is perfect in this one too and has a lot to do with the success of the image Warm regards from sunny Amsterdam

Great capture of that tentative step, Jessie, and I like your composition here with lots of open space for her to "move" into. Looks like you've got the method nailed to me! Just keep taking lots of shots! Dave.
