"Thank you, Doyle, for your kind comments and for correcting me on the year. We all make mistakes, but at least we are staying alive.:)
I got my information from a Polish book, which gave the strength of the earthquake as 9 on the Richter scale.
You are right, Doyle, I was in this place in August 2001, and it moved me very deeply. It is a strange feeling to walk on ground where you know thousands of people are buried beneath your feet.
My friend in Peru runs a travel agency, so if you are interested in visiting, you let me know. With Warm Regards Stan

Perowianczycy papieza ubostwiali. To bardzo tragicznie doswiadczony narod. Stanislaw

Ahhhh - Yungay it's called here. The 1970 quake. So that others might grasp this Stan . . . allow me, if you will to explain a little?
In 1970 the city Yungay, a city HIGH in the Andes in central Peru . . . was completely destroyed by an Earthquake (7.7 richter) which caused what is known as alluvion . . . high lakes breach the shores and cause enormous slides with water, mud, stones as big as houses . . . it was this which destroyed the town and about 18,000 inhabitants. The quake killed about 70,000 in all. All that was left above the ground was the steeple of the church. The slide started 3km higher in the mountain, 14 km away . . . and hit the unsuspecting town in 20 seconds with 15 million cubic meters of granite.
These are rugged and great people. They believe the departed have abandoned their shells and moved on to a better place. And they continue, having built New Yungay just below the alluvion path.
Stan . . . you sound like you were there! Wow . . . a true tragedy . . . and the history gives the photo even more meaning . . . with the white statue of Christ looking over and the people, in their faith, rebuilding.
Nicely done!
Regards, Doyle I <~~~~~

Stan -- For the colors and breathtaking beauty this is my favorite of the series posted to date. I know you used film but it has an HDR-like quality about it and really pops with detail and drama. --Best to you, Jan PS: Having a city with the name "Dead" in it raises all kinds of imaginative wondering.
