That's a challenging angle to shoot from, what with the sun coming down like that and the dust getting about. I think it worked against you in this shot. Looks like the dust really lit up and clouded sertain regions through the middle.
When shooting into the sun it seems you sometimes have to trade off exposure for detail by pulling your stop (under exposing the shot) and hope for the best in the darkness.
I can see the benefit in using a fill-flash in shots like this, but if you can get the exposure control down you'll be grabbing those flares better than anyone.
I do like the lens flares. Would be nice to seem more sharply since they don't run over the rider.

Thanks David.. yeah its a pain in the bum trying to get this stuff right an maintain a decent ISO.. the pro's use trackside flashes!!!

....hey Roger, this is a beauty, a strong composition, while you have frozen the subject there is movement portrayed by the wisps of dust over the track so you can see where Nick has been and where he is going.....good work, difficult subject brought to life in this pic. cheers, david.
