I use PS Elements, what do you mean by tonal separation, even greater contrast? Also this was a color shot I removed color on so that also may be an issue. If I reduced the contrast the elements in the background would start showing up behind the stairs and that would distract from the shot.

This is a very interesting combination of shadows and patterns. I think that the diagonal of light makes it work well. If you decide to work on it more, maybe the shadows area on the decking and stairs would benefit from more tonal separation. But, it shouldn't be so much as to draw attention away from rest of the image.
