I like the deeper, richer colours in this one, Todd. Ivo's tracking sure works well. These pictures make me yearn for a long night under dark skies. Hopefully this summer will bring that. I can't take pictures like you, but I can enjoy the eyepiece view and then drool over your shots.

If you do figure out how Registax works, let me know. I've been strugling with that all month without a lot of success. It seems to be designed for huge stacks of webcam images.

Dave,

I wouldn't say you are wrong. Noise is a big problem, but there are many processing tricks to deal with it. Keeping the ISO low and lengthening the exposure really helps, but it's not practical if you don't have a tracking mount. Your exposure time is greatly reduced to avoid star trails. Another thing about digital, which you probably already know, is the light sensitivity is linear where film gets less sensitive with increased exposure. Long exposures result in hot spots like the image of the Orion Nebula. The core is overexposed to get the detail in the outer nebula. The camera is also capable of taking a dark frame which I plan to experiment with. Stay tuned...

Thanks, Todd. For some reason I had thought that those kind of long exposures didn't work so well in the digital format, because of noise. Obviously I was wrong.

Dave,

This is my first attempt at astrophotography, and I had help from another usefilm member (http://www.usefilm.com/photographer.asp?ID=85099) who is also a member of my astronomy group.

The settings were ISO 400, F2.8, 8 minute exposure. I did include the information when I first posted this picture, before I learned how to process the image properly. See also one of my comments on http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1219965 for a detailed explanation of the process. I did try stacking some images, but to tell you the truth, I have never figured out how to make Registax work. I prefer the single exposure even though it is difficult to balance the exposure that way.

Happy Holidays to you, Dave.

Care to share exposure info here, Todd? Did you stack several images, and if so what software do you use?

This does look much more realistic Todd.
Again a very impressive image,
Bill
