Location City -  Sossusvlei
State -  SOUTHERN NAMIBIA
Country - Namibia   Namibia
About The eastern boundary of the red dunes of Sossusvlei, Namibia. taken from the air in a Gyrocopter. A Gyrocopter is an open, mini-helicopter, you sit in the backseat (in tandem), the average speed is about 150km/hour and one have to shelter oneselve against the wind by hiding behind the back of the pilot. The wind is so strong that you have to hold onto the camera very well to prevent it from flying through the air (lost a few lensecaps in the process). I used the 50mm Nikkor for max lens opening but opted for ISO 200 on the D70 for best results/lowest noise. The light was very low and deteriorated from 1/1,500sec when we lifted to about 1/100sec when the sun set - all within about 20 minutes. One unforgettable experience.

Stunning, Joggie. Well worth the scary ride to get it. You're very brave. I'd go in a helicopter but I'd have to think long and hard about a Gyrocopter. Cheers, Ann.

It looks unforgetable, Joggie. Wonderful landscape.

Markus

PS: I once made the last flight on a helicopter in Australia in the evening. On the first flight next morning the helicopter crashed. Now I always have an uneasy feeling with copters.

Perhaps the best of the series, Joggie! The light perfectly sculpts the dunes - may as well be from Mars!

Joggie, you got some incredible shots during this flight, just beautiful. Esepcially considering the conditions you describe. I always assumed gyrocopters were fairly slow.

Anyway, your series from this adventure are otastanding.

A gyrocopter arrives till the moon? It seems an extraterrestrial panorama, beautifully captured. The shadows create impressive volumes and detect the texture. A photo of great interest for me, Joggie.
Take care.

What a terrific image, Joggie. I'm impressed by the colour of these dunes and by the way you captured them to show us some magnificent patterns of light and shadows.
My compliments and best regards - Emgy

you did a great job capturing the gradient at the dunes boundary...it looks like grass it's taking over the dunes
