About I don't usually post zoo shots, but this is a rather interesting bear. Not a polar bear, or even an albino, he's actually a black bear that somehow didn't turn black! He was orphaned in Northern Manitoba when his mother was hit by a vehicle, and was brought down to the Assiniboine Zoo in Winnipeg when it was felt he wouldn't survive in the wild.

What a beautiful shot Dave.. though always feel so sad when I see something like this. His life in the wild would have been short.. but I can't help but feel a life in captivity is not a life after all

Just my personal view... though I guess, judging by some of the press bears in captivity have had over the past few years, this guy has got away lightly.

The photo itself is great... such a gorgeous pose.. love the way you've caught his paws.. he looks so cuddly :) Nice capture x

This is gorgeous- especially to prove this black bear is surviving! The textures and the colours in this is brilliant. And the eyes!

Hi Dave,
I thought that was a weird looking Polar Bear:)
The shape of his head is gives it away. A very strange anomaly.
Nice clear shot!

Intersting anectode about this animal. I like the action implied in the subtle positioning of the feet. This very little item creates amazing visual tension.

Oh I love this one Dave, the DOF and details in the fur are perfect, great composition and pose with him looking right at you, I always like when we can see the eyes of the animal, and a very interesting about too, wonder why he didn't turn black? I don't always like to post zoo shots either for some reason. I always enjoy the getting the flowers and foilage at the zoo rather than the animals, even though I do enjoy the zoo...beautifully done...:) Linda

Very interesting set of circumstances that happened to this bear. He sure looks domesticated. The shot turned out really nice Dave. Great detail and composition, and the background really sets the bear off. You should post more zoo shots. Thanks for your bird ID, I have a terrible time even with bird books because I am colour blind, and they seem to change colours from year to year.

Dave: Cool shot! He seems to be a light variation rather than an albino as his eyes and nose are dark. He would love to talk to the ground squirrel in the next shot back. They are even similar in color.
