Maybe not that expensive. I bought some IR LED's thinking I could make an IR ring flash (though it would not flash but provide continuous emission). (Haven't embarked as yet.) Those cost me maybe $15 including shipping for 20 LED's. The same could be done with some normal spectral LED's (like the bright blue one in my key fob). I'm going to talk to this friend of mine who does electronics repair to see if he can help me put it together. We'll see.

Let me know how it works out James...The other alternative which I guess is the way you're really s'pposed to do it is get a ring flash...a very expensive alternative

I had a feeling you were going to say something of this sort. My SD550 doesn't even allow me to turn my flash down. Consequently, I almost never use it (too bright for anything up close).

I got to thinking about the flash problem, though maybe I could put something in front of my flash unit (it doesn't pop up, so it's tricky for me). I thought maybe a bit of plastic scuffed up to act as diffuser might do the trick. Then I went google:

http://home.comcast.net/~dougsmit/bounceflashtoys.html

I think I'll test my scuffed up plastic idea--I should be able to just hold it in front of the flash as I shoot.

All your ideas are correct James & I appreciate the suggestions...The situation was this was the onboard flash of the D50 turned down to 1/16 power...thus there is no control over directionality...even had I used my SB600 there was nothing but sky to bounce the flash off of....thanks again...keep up the great comments.

I like this shot and the framing is spot-on. The one thing that bothers me is that the flash seem to have done something here it shouldn't have. Maybe it's a little too harsh on the spider. I don't know if you can move your flash off-axis (so it's not directly above the lens), but that might help. So might using a bounce to more evenly distribute the light. Anyway, hope that's helpful.
