About There were 5 youths trying to win the bull riding competition. For those of you who would never do this . . . the two youngest were only 7 yrs. old. & these 7 yr. olds still had to hold on for 8 secs. -
In a heartbreaking moment this 7 year old tried to ride a bull calf for 8 seconds and dedicated the ride to his father who was being deployed to Iraq in the morning. He couldn't hold for 8 seconds . . . but he earned countless prayers for his father to come home safely and showed more steely determination than many adults would have . . . and exited as a consumate showman . . . without shame!
Whatever your country . . . the children are the children and an end to violence and war helps all!

To All:
My thanks goes to Markus for raising the issue of animal cruelty. Although I did not witness it here . . . I do think it is a valid concern and feel compelled to reject it whenever seen!

BTW Markus . . . I see this comment was posted several times but will limit myself to one response.
:0)
Should you wish to continue this conversation - please put in in an e-mail and send it to the address in my bio . . . I would appreciate it if the comments under photos were about the photos and didn't devolve into something less and your point has been made . . . I'll certainly look for the issues you raised in the future. And I respect your stance against cruelty.
:)

Markus:
Perhaps you misunderstood my point. I would never say there has never been incidents of animal cruelty anywhere. I was saying nothing remotely like that happened here. I DID google as you suggested and sure enough there are a lot of sites claiming abuse.
Some of the people who oppose Rodeo and other animal uses are well-meaning individuals wanting to do something to prevent animal cruelty. Unfortunately, their views are often based on contrived, sensationalized materials designed by people who cannot be credited with the same worthy intentions. (Consider some of the same sites you mentioned . . . some want to prevent the use, and not just the abuse, of animals)
When I google Animal Abuse (Bull riding) I get from wikipedia and ask.com this:
Animal rights activists are vocal critics of rodeos, because of reported injuries and distress to the animals involved. The American Humane Society contends that rodeos are not an accurate or harmless portrayal of ranching skills; rather, they display and encourage brutal treatment of animals in the name of sport.
Much of the criticism is drawn to the spectacular, but generally harmless (to the animals) rough stock events: bull riding, bareback bronc riding and saddle bronc riding. The timed events such as calf roping and especially steer roping pose a greater likelihood of injury to the animals. The rodeo associations have made some changes to reduce the chances of injury, such as requiring older, heavier calves for calf roping, larger steers for steer wrestling and many rodeos no longer have steer roping. In addition, severe penalties have been enacted for any techniques that increase the risk to the animal, such as jerking the rope, in effect ensuring that any cowboy using such tactics will lose or be disqualified from the event.
________________________________________________
Overall, the reality is that the risk of injury or death is much greater to the human participants than to the animals.
_________________________________________________
Rodeo associations claim that animal abuse is not tolerated and may fine, suspend or ban individuals found abusing animals. --------
So there it is . . . I SAW no abuse and believe there was none. The bulls were bucking to get the guys off their backs. Not due to shock or torture. No horses were bucking . . . no animal was roped or wrestled . . . there was no loud music to distract us and the bulls were in an open, highly visible pen. I was there-

Doyle, the horses, bulls, even calves are not bucking for joy, they are tortured. Just google "animal cruelty rodeo"!

Thanks Jessie . . . never even heard of a movie called 8 seconds . . . it's about this? By the way . . . I doubt I'd let my 7 yr. old pet a bull NEAR the pens! LoL! Markus mentioned this was animal cruelty which did concern me though in all honesty if it is in some places I saw no clue of it here. Perhaps the movie has cruelty to animals as a feature of it?

Doyle I <~~~~~

Interesting comment Markus and of course you have the right to your own opinion. As it happens, I am a very big animal lover and care for hundreds of animals daily. Not a rancher though . . . mostly birds. Still . . . I consider myself very sensitive to animals and any form of cruelty and just don't see the cruelty of an eighty pound 7 yr. old riding on the back of a 400 pound calf (except maybe to the 7 yr. old). The bulls outweigh the riders in every age group by five or more to one and though the men can and do get hurt during or after this 8 second ride . . . I have never seen an injured bull. This is not like in traditional bull fights where bulls are tortured and slaughtered as a spectator sport. To me . . . that would be a shame and I wouldn't attend. But this? This I truly believe makes a man sore the next day . . . but I doubt the bull suffers.

Doyle I <~~~~~

Sorry Doyle, that I can't join the admiration of other commenters. I cannot understand that this form of animal cruelty still finds an audience. It is a big shame.

Thanks Laura:
The 7 yr. old last about 2 or 3 seconds but knew how to exit the field in style! No prize . . . no win . . . but plenty of pride and glory . . . I mean he DID get on the bull!

Very good action photos! The colors are rich and vivid. Details are sharp. Judging from the last image on the right, the cowboy qualifies for a big prize!
