I like this one best of the violin player. The is a clear connection between the person and the instrument. There is also a powerful intimacy here between the viewer and the person, and the person and the violin. And the single light source adds to the sense of immediacy and intimacy.
As a critique, I would like to see the violin be very slightly less dominant in this shot and the face slightly more dominant. Since the face is located slightly behind the violin and is in it's shadow, it leaves the impression that the person is slightly secondary to the violin. The violinist might agree with this statement as most musicians are awed by there instruments (myself included!), but as a portrait I would like to see the face of the musician domainate. It is the player that dominates the instrument (or it shouyld be). Also perhaps a bit more clarity would help the shot, but maybe not. It is a powerful and effective portrait, these remarks aside.
As always, best regards, Mark

i really like this close up portrait... symmetrically divided but not quite... the violin may be the protagonist in the pic but unconsiously the eye wonders over his face coming out of the black behind... the deep shadows add to its melangholic feel while accentuating the facial curves in combination to the violin's ones... very well done my friend... hugs... Jeanette:
I've never used the Fuji - I went to digital after I wore the foam seals out in my film camera, so I have crossed that divide where I can't really go back to film. Very sad. I'd like to someday be established enough to go back to film.

A very fitting and worthy entry to this new project my dear Jeanette. This is a truely wonderful monochromatic study and you have put great thought into it's composure. The violin has, over the last few centuries, produced such an amazing collection of haunting melodies and the expression on your subject's face has a haunted and melancholic look to it. The details and tones are awesome, the lighting effects superb. Well done to you sweetie this is a first class offering given in the memory of Arnold Newman. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray

Yes - i know the digital is faster and also better for the nature to work with. But tmax 100 (along many other) is a nice film to work with. For sharp and unvisible grain i like Fuji´s B&W film. Have you tried it? Jeanette

Thanks Doyle for your comment. This kind of portraits are not difficult to do. You will learn easily. This one is not perfect either when concerning photographic rules. But i wanted a dark look and only one light and this look of coming out from the dark. To be correct i should have used a reflector to reflect the light and get less black shadows....but here this was exactly what i wanted out from the photo. I think i will redo this some day with the same model, if i can find him ;-) Jeanette

Like this work as it fits the current project, just shows how you can bust out old skool on the portraiture and get a BIP right out of the gate.

Jaenette, this is for me one of your most beautiful photo. It hits me strongly the first time that I saw it. I like all: the refinement of the matching artist/his instrument; the keen look and the light in the eyes; but most of all the wonderful shadows and lights. Bravissima! Buona notte Jaenette.
