They're right, the tones are what does it. It has that liquid silver quality that is often so hard to find in a good print. The depth of field is perfect for the situation. Arnold would approve!

Good tribute, Dave! The B&W tonal range is great. I like his intent concentration. The pipes' lines mimic the branch patterns going in the opposite diagonals.

The bagpipes are best heard five fields away- apparently. good tones in the image and you have done well to hold the whites. Good simpple portrait.
