About The oldest, still standing set on the Universal Studios Lot is the infamous Bates motel and house (yes mother?) behind it. Made famous by Alfred Hitchcock in his movie, "Psycho" and still a classic, this shot had to be cropped leftward since Whoville Sets from Jim Carrie's movie, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" tower over the motel on the right side. Toned into B&W to give us the feel of the movie.

no stairway to heaven there. The crisp black and white fit it beautifully.

Actually it is Norman looking out . . . I didn't see it when I originally took the shot but apparently they have a cardboard cutout there to add atmosphere . . . at least I HOPE it's a cutout!!

Doyle,

Is that Norman peeking out of the window?

Well done my friend,

Thanks Gayle . . . maybe I should get this one framed. I hadn't considered it but why not? I agree . . . you almost HAVE to do it in B&W. I panicked at one point thinking it was in color . . . but was told, apparently, that there was a remake in color. Regardless, I first saw it in B&W even if it had been in color and that's what my memories keep conjuring! Would love to do a nightshot, but I think Marlyce might get better shots of the police arresting me for breaking and entering . . . these studios all seem to have security! ;)

hope you have this one on your wall by now...one of my all time fave films and this is such a cool shot,Doyle....very well composed and made for B/W...a night shot of this would have been stellar,too...by a full moon,of course! Love the inclusion of bates in the motel window...what a hoot! I was fortunate to see Perkins in a NYC play many moons ago and he is very skinny, but brilliant!

No problem Michele . . . I appreciate hearing from people when they have time to respond and not when they feel pressured to. Responses from some people . . . like yourself . . . invariably will come. I take my time too . . . as you no doubt know . . . and can be very slow on ocassion. What humor? :)

Dear Doyle
I bet you didn“t jump in there to have a shower!! A very fascinating image when knowing the movie. A bit funny with the picnicchairs down on the left that takes the feeling of horror away, and then when looking right, the feeling all comes back!!
Best wishes,
Annemette

Wow ! There is a small motel accross the street from me and I put text over it writing BATES instead of what it was called ! Strange I did a fake one + you got the real deal. Again very nice shot Doyle . I hope you got my message about company this week-end and was not ignoring Your critiques + my Siamese twin in any way. I am learning from what you tell me. I did manage a straighter horizon line in most of my week-end shots. I do appreciate the suggestions as well as the HUMOR !

Thanks Avi . . . a "blast from the past" indeed! Such a shame that (and no disrespect intended) today's heroes are Jim Carrey, Jack Black, and a host of others who seem to fall short of the expectations I have been raised with. I love their skill and work . . . honestly . . . (picture Jack Black in King Kong) . . . but, for now, they're not in the same league by my way of thinking. In the years to come . . . today's youth will say the same about the unkown stars to come and wax nostalgic over the stars THEY grew up with. But that's then . . . for now . . . we have OUR classics! . . . and such is the circle of life!

Doyle I <~~~~~

Indeed, classics are CLASSICS !!..

I KNOW how you hate me saying this - . . . BUT . . . I really do want to thank you for commenting on my work! I just got back from a whirlwind trip through your scenic portfolio myself and see that I have been commenting on it for some time. Well . . . here and there! From the looks of it . . . you didn't need as much improvement as I did! Not to worry - few people did!

Welcome back Sheila!!
Thanks for stopping by to comment. I didn't see Norman in the window until Marlyce pointed it out. I'm hoping it was a cardboard cut-out . . . it's just VERY creepy to be there . . . get the shot . . . and THEN see that in the window! :)

Love it! Great choice with the black and white! Is that Norman in the window or just a ghost? He's so perfect in this photo. It makes the photo even creepier with him in the window! Great job!

MM:
:) This doesn't simply appear to be like the house my friend . . . this IS the house. The foreground image is the Bates Motel which was an integral part of the movie (where the shower scene ocurred) and the car IS the one she drove. This is where it was filmed and what you see here is what was on the movie. Recall, if you will, that Norman Bates lived in the house behind his Motel with his mother. A scary movie in its day . . . probably elicit a yawn from my kids though! :)
Thanks for the comments!

Doyle I <~~~~~

That was one very scary movie! And yes, this house appears to be rather like the one in the movie.

Nice work in converting it to black and white. Good tonal values. You have some pure whites and blacks with all the gray shades as well.

I only wish the house and car were not in the foreground.

I didn't know Avi! But, I'm very glad you like this shot! I'm feeling old when my own children (forget about the granddchildren) ask me WHO is John Wayne??? Arrrrrghhh! But there are still some of us who know and love the classics. I like to think it's because WE'RE classics now too!

Thanks Ray . . . this was the first time I had ever seen it (other than in the movie). It felt so surreal to see it too. The Bates Motel sign was still standing with the 'Vacancy' neon flashing, though I didn't capture it (Marlyce managed). I may try to talk her into putting up a color version. Thanks for the comments . . . Maybe I should put up a shot of the motel with 'Whoville' in it--now THAT'S surreal!
:)
