I darken around them with a gray layered masked and in raw I brought down the exposer to try and get some of the all white out. The orginal image is a lot brighter.

You've nailed a great moment here, but photographically, you're missing a major aspect. Your subjects are lit in the same way as your background and unfortunately they just blend right in. Obviously to fix this, simply using a flash will bring out your foreground and keep your background unlit :)
