Hi Mark,
thanks for the long answer.
And I was just thinking, that it might be interesting to see just this holy person without anything showing that there are living people nearby - so there are two possibilities: just to take a picture from a similar angle but turned the camera more down - so there will be no heaven on it but only stones and the figure and a little bit of gras and things but nothing else manmade.
Second possibilitie: Taking a picture from near the ground, lying down to take it for example. So you can see heaven (doesn't matter, if there are clouds or whatever kind of wheather you've got these days), you can see poor beaten figure and stones around him and nothing else than loneliness.
Both pictures should be as dark as the one above and should have these hard contrasts, shows the loneliness the better ...
(That's what I would try with this figure, I can imagine it to look impressive).

Have a nice day

Erik

At work last night thought about this more, Erik

The stones on a practical level are there because Texas has strong winds in December and this person obviously didn't want it to fall over.

Stones are interesting, they can be used so many ways. From building homes to great walls, to castles, to cathedrals and mosques. Certain stones can clean our clothes, and relieve our stomaches.

Given the right kind of stone you can start fire. We can chisel them and reveal great art, put them in gardens and contemplate the universe, or simply throw them at our enemies and start wars.

So yes I think they have a lot to do with religion, in this context.

What made me sad was the disuse this person had toward something they must have at least once cherished. That it's use or burden got to heavy or it wasn't important to them no longer and they left it to the winds. Felt like a metaphor of someone giving up on their religion. Maybe they moved on, don't know only found this.

It's down the street from where I live, don't see why I shouldn't try your idea, with the idea of less heaven should it be stormy day or just crop more of the sky out?

Thanks Erik for making me think a bit more.

Mark

Hm,
if I wanted to be a little bit nasty, I would say: So inside religion there are just stones ...
But as long as you're not speaking with your gods and they're telling you to start wars, it's ok with me to believe, if you want to.
And the picture itself? I like the greytones, the hard contrasts and the setting itself.
What do you think about an other frame - I can imagine with more empty, stonefilled place in the foreground, less heaven and without modern sign in background it would be very interesting too ...

Oh my God it is Joseph again! And the missing hand that haunts is central. I like his head raised and the shadow. There is just something unique about these images I can't quite get the words for. The stones all around that could be a biblical age and then the real "stop" sign- bang up to date. I feel it will appear in my dream!

Right off the highway, a brutal relic. From the prvious posting I had no idea of the size of the figure. It now looks near-lifesize. Good work . . .

Regards,
--George
