Grady,

To get any detail in the shadow, the sunlit areas of the moon would be grossly overexposed. See http://www.usefilm.com/showphoto.php?id=106679 for an example of how the sunlit side would look, note the overexposed crescent. The best contrast of features on the moon comes near the terminator (day/night line). It's the nature of the beast.

Wow, thats really cool. I do wish that there was more detail in the shadow on the right side though.
