Good luck with the show. This is the kind of shooting that's big fun. Try to shoot during sound check if you can. The performers won't have their stage clothes on but you'll probably be able to get in very close during sound check. I hope we get to see some of the stuff you shoot tonight. Have a great time!

Hi Steve, thanks for your encouraging words! This shot was taken on stage while the sax player was warming up before the show. I play in the band with him and so was standing right beside him when I took the shot. This allowed the tight crop you mention. Also, the perspective from side stage gives a more interesting variety of lighting than you see from the front in the audience. Thanks again for your comment.

The composition and colors are fabulous, Mark. I'm so glad you chose to do such a tight crop. It really enhances the sax man's intensity and commitment. Very well done! Steve

Thank a lot for this very perceptive comment, George! I agree that shooting from side stage is good for just the reason you say. Most often the lights are strongest from the front and so the side perspective offers more dimansion in the subject. Also, it offers a view/perspective that the audience does not normally see so that automatically adds a little interest.
One side comment, for better or worse, public smoking is no longer allowed here in Massachusetts, and while my eyes and lungs like that very much, one negative aspect is that you no longere have the pall of smoke in the air that gives colored stage lighting such intensity and impact. On the other hand, the people on stage are more visible, so perhaps that makes up for the lost ambience. :-)
Best regards, Mark

This is a very nice shot. The lights, the color and the title create a fine sense of intensity and concentration. Having done theater photography for many years, I often inclined towards shooting fromjust this angle--from the wings catching a couple of the light sources coming in from the other side. You do it here very convincingly. The result is hot indeed! Regards, --George

Hi Ina, you're right that the mood is a little more intimate here than my shot of the percussionist. This one was shot as the sax player had just started warming up prior to the start of the performance, so I could get close to shoot this. Plus he's a friend that I have played with for many years so he was pretty relaxed with me shooting right next to him.
You make a very interesting observation about the red light on his face accentuating conentration and effort. I think the intesity of that light on his face but not elsewhere (less intense light on his body and the back of his head) emphasizes the facial expression and a sense of exhertion. As a side note, I added the red highlight on his dark shirt and the back of his head using the brush tool in PS to give an impression of back lighting. It was an experiment but it worked out pretty well as it adds a little better sense of dimension in the scene I think. There's a whole set of skills needed to get live performace shots, both onstage and in the "darkroom". :-)

A different mood it seems from the drummer, more intimate - but I could be wrong, judging just by what I see in this instance. The red light on his face accentuates the effort and concentration, while the other two bright reflectors act as your composition counterbalance. Excellent reflections on the sax, and excellent mood, Mark! Best regards, Ina

Mark, un ottimo scatto musicale, veramente ben eseguito! Anch'io amo molto le foto di concerti e mi diletto! In questa tuo foto le luci sono splendide e sono il punto focale dello scatto! Complimenti! Ciao
