Wonderful capture! I really love the crop. The lighting on the rock gives me this feeling as if I'm gazing into an otherworldly place. Sort of alien and surreal, but beautiful.
Great work as always! -d

This is excellent indeed Peta! Wonderful composition and colours. Not sure how you did it but although this is in a way a hard subject, you created soft nuances of brown, grey and blue - Beautiful! I like the way the 2 birds are posing opposite to each other! Great work. 7++ Joggie

Hi Peta,
wow, what a special stone! this looks like an egg of a dinosaur baby that just has split into half ;-)
great widescreen format and work on the sky. and good to have those birdies in place.
hope you're fine. Thilo

Thanks Jase - yeah I like the B&W also (it made it to January on my 2006 calendar I had made) but just thought some of my friends might like to see it in colour also. I do like in this one how you can see right through the rocks though.

Hi Peta, I think the more extreme positioning of the rock, allowing a bigger view on the endless ocean makes this shot stronger than the B&W version. Also, I like the low POIV in this one. Very good capture, and absolutely wonderful in full size pano.
Cheers,
Hugo

Wow, seals too? I hope you photographed them! That must have been exciting! I would be nervous too being with my camera on the water, there are some P&S cameras with water housings, I think I'd opt for one of those for a trip like that! Best regards, Ina

Thank so much Ina, I was on the water and very nervous about having my camera with me! We had seals playing and splashing us also! I only ended up taking 4 shots. This is called Split Rock. :)

Hi Peta, superb and unusual landscape! The B & W picture of the Split is what brought me to your portfolio, and I love the color version too! Superb composition, perfect in every aspect, and I like the two birds, just amazing! Were you on the water or on land? Wonderful natural colors, the birds give a sense of scale, these rocks are huge! Is this what they are called, or is it your title? Absolutely stunning! Ina

Hi there again Peta (I have to so hold back typing your name... otherwise you'll end up with a L on the end too.... LOL). I certainly know about the Devils Marbles... been there, seen them, touched them... boy it's hot out there... LOL... and that's why I told you he must've forgotten one in the neighbours garden (NZ next to OZ right).... never knew there were similar rocks in NZ... ;-D Have a great weekend... see yah.... Petal.

Hi Petal, did you know there is a famous rock formation down here called Devils Marbles? Its in the Northern Territory. Anyway, yes I always sharpen lightly after resizing, but I dont think thats why you're seeing a halo. Maybe its b/c I adjusted curves to bring up some of the shadow detail and when I erased the sky close to the rock I didnt get close enough? Looked fine on my monitor of course - maybe I'm due to calibrate it again, lol. Oh I cant keep up! Thanks Petal, glad you mentioned it :)

Great shot!! Excellent composition/angle, nice colors and the two gulls are a neat bonus!! One very small remark/question... did you sharpen this... I see a sort of 'halo' around the rocks... If so: a bit less next time, if not: got to get my eyes tested/buy a new laptop... LOL!! BTW looks like when the devil played with his marbles... he forgot to pick up the one that landed in the neighbours garden... ;-D

Wow! What a cool rock. This is so nicely composed. I like the ethereal feel that it has. Another small element that really appeals to me is how the two birds on each side of the rock are facing each other. They also provide scale which is needed for this type of photo. Very cool image.

This is a fantastic place to kayak around. Going by the size of those seagulls on the top these rocks are huge. Oh yeah...fun paddling (if a little chilly maybe?) Great composition and details. Lovely colours and excellent exposure. Beaut shot.
Cheers - Ann :)
