I really like the blur. It makes it look as though his fingers are moving at lightning speed up the neck of that SG.

Hi Richard, Haven't seen you around for a bit. You are right. This is my youngest son and his guitar. It's a newer production model Epiphone SG, based on the late 60's model. He tells me that some music experts did a kind of blind audio test with professionals playing the original hand made ones verses this model. The new cheap one turned out to be the one most of them picked as the real one. :) So much for music experts :)

Nicely composed shot my friend. The SG is a nice little guitar (I believe that looks like a late 60's SG Standard), often forgotten in the Strat, Les Paul wars.

Hi Andrzej, Don't worry at all about not getting the reference. You definitely got the point of the image, and that is what counts!
I'm a little torn sometimes when I attach a reference in the about that is vague or exclusive. It is a little like inviting a select few to an "in" joke. That isn't really fair and a little rude to the rest of the people. Andre

Andre, although I'm missing the reference - I was on different pages of history then - I like the idea of the motion blur in the image to make the guitar play. Great dynamic effect suggesting loud high-pitched Rock sounds coming out of the speakers. Nice crop. Cheers, n.j

Mark, I'll bet there is a DVD set out there somewhere that has both movies and some other goodies on it as well. What a great satire that original film was! If you go to the websites for Spinal Tap, it looks like it has turned into a whole little industry! Andre

Hi Susie, Yes, he is my youngest Son. So far the band likes the images and I'm told they might use one. I'll have to wait and see :) They are playing a gig tomorrow at some punk club downtown TO. They are having a ball. Making just a little money that goes back into the band to pay for gas. Oh well. Even the Stones started out that way! I told him that I would do some more shots of him for when he releases his solo album :) Or for the cover of the Rolling Stone! Andre

Spinal Tap..that's a classic rockumentary. It gets funnier every time I watch it, 'cause there's a lot of innuendos and sight gags going on all at once. I like the songs, too! But I can't mention the titles (like, "the bigger the cushion, the better the _____")

Hi Ina, That was funny... Big difference between 18' and 18" . The dancing dwarves were good too! And the "Don't touch the guitar" scene! "Just look at it! You can hear the shine on it!" Then there was the interference of the girlfriend, right out the "Let It Be" movie with Yoko Ono hanging around. Andre

Thanks Ina, I just love the way that movie makes "Rock Stars" take a long, hard look at themselves! It is brilliant and you can watch it over and over to find little subtlties. Right, a true focal point. Like the airport security scene:) My favourite part is the sandwhich tantrum :) "The meat is too big and the bread is too small" There are too many scenes to mention. They all crack me up! Stonehenge, The military ball booking, the shoe salesman bit. A very funny movie! Andre

Thanks Ray, You are forgiven for not knowing who Spinal Tap is:) Although I would have thought you might, as you are about the same age as me.
Spinal Tap is the name of a fictitious Heavy Metal Band. Rob Reiner made a fantastic "sleeper" hit "Mockumentary" that followed a made up 1982 American tour by the group. The band is on the way down in popularity, and they don't realize it yet. The film is hilarious. I can't put a url of a website up, but you can look it up or better yet rent the dvd if you think you might like it. The reference in the about is a little bit where Nigel, one of the leaders of the band is being interviewed about the band's equipment. Nigel is trying to explain how their amps are louder than other band's amps because the dials go up to 11 instead of 10. It is one of the classic parts of the movie that just has to be seen to be appreciated. The look on Nigel's face when the interviewer asks him why you don't just make 10 the loudest you can go is just priceless. Then he just says. "But...ours go to eleven" Andre

Thanks Jon, I figured most people who were interested in opening a shot like this would probably be aware of Spinal Tap :) I like B&W for Rock images. I think if anything, this one may not be "gritty" enough. I'm going to do some more "staged" images of Derek with a darker background for a grittier mood. I have few ideas spinning around in my head :) Andre

Heh-heh, Andre! I recognized the Spinal Tap reference from the title, even before I read the "about" - coolest movie, one of my favorites! That part, especially and just about every other minute of it! Now, seeing the image and knowing the reference makes it just too funny! Great B & W - love the hand blur and (ahem) the focus on the jeans (true Spinal Tap focal point) - great job! Ina

Very effective shutter speed my friend and an excellent choice of these wonderful mono tones. Now, about your 'about'. Am I forgiven if I don't know what or who is Spinal Tap, I mean, I have heard the term used before. Jon O'Brian seems to think that only idiots would fail this 'simple' reference. Is age a good excuse? I am also a little hard of hearing....too much really loud music in my past. Great shot Andre my friend, take care, best wishes to you....Ray

How could you not get the Spinal Tap reference? The blurring effect is good (although it might have come across more clearly if you had staged it) and I think the choice of black and white is really effective. Rock and roll SHOULD be gritty.
