About for the kindly one of the shivering north
If anyone can remember the art work of the band the residents you may recall this but actually Trying to follow runic settings with the text. :)
Will keep trying to get this right, just sharing an obsession in progress through all its permutations.
Text reads:
"I counsel thee, Stray-Singer, accept my counsels,
they will be thy boon if thou obey'st them,
they will work thy weal if thou win'st them:
hold never in scorn the hoary singer;
oft the counsel of the old is good;
come words of wisdom from the withered lips
of him left to hang among hides,
to rock with the rennets
and swing with the skins."
Northern god Odin in the Havamal

Gah! Not enough time! Two+ weeks later and I'm finally getting around to replying...

I wanted to thank you for the terrific links...I'm going to visit them today and download copies. Thank you, my friend!!

Re Beowulf, did you read Seamus Heaney's translation? It's superb!

I must admit I don't get it...but it's photoart and I love the colours and framing:)

Jude!
Here's a translation I like for its more fully archaic metre.: http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/havamal.html
I think it is one of many texts known as "the poetic edda" that you can find translations of on the net.

Here is the Auden:
http://www.ragweedforge.com/havamal.html
The Aden I like but he cut what he considered to be redundancies I think, especially the repetitive "I counsel thee"s that add such nice metre to reading it, but the Auden does have a lot to offer.
He did a book of translations of icelandic sagas I've found in the library
I so enjoyed Beowulf myself, was amazed at how easy it is to read.
Cheers, Ian

I'm still loving this project, Ian...my Beowulf-loving soul cries for more. Truly.

And I love this image, especially the way you've made the border, as though a maze, or pathway, rather than a frame.

Re the text, is there somewhere online I can get the full version? I'd really love to read it.
