Photographer: Houssen Soufan (Karma=456)
Damascus, SYR
About: I was born during the winter solstice of 1977; raised and educated in Europe. Photography is a speculative interpretation of life, or the difference between reality and truth. In my work, I want to examine the relationship between photography and reality and stimulate the viewers to project their own interpretation, thus becoming an integral part of the creative process. My work has been published and exhibited internationally. I work in color and black & white, but my passion is for black & white because of its beauty and feeling. I like to photograph my friends on locations, in a space of special relevancy - e.g. their home or other sacred spots. My studio, too, is not a sterile environment - it is part of my home and has an informal and relaxed atmosphere. I reject the kind of photography, which runs off a revolving template and creates glamorized faces retouched beyond recognition. I aim to expose people's natural beauty and to express the whole person in my photographs. Rather than merely photographing a face, I try to interpret somebody's essence.
