  Q. Care of Telephoto lens in very cold environments?

Asked by al shaikh   Donor  (K=15790) on 1/17/2002
What would you suggest to care for telephoto lenses 400mm _ in very cold environments?

I would talk to a good repair technician about this, maybe call Nikon or Canon Professional Services, Hasselblad USA in NJ, etc. I have heard that in _very_ cold situations, where you'll be out in subzero temps for hours at a time, you have the lube removed from the camera. Apparently it can freeze and be more harm than good. I assume the same might apply to the lens.

I've used my camera gear at temperatures as cold as -72?F with no real problems other than the obvious. If you breathe on any part of the camera or lens you will fog it. If any part of the camera touches bare skin it will cause immediate frostbite.
Batteries don't work well when they are cold. AF may not work because batteries are too cold. But seriously, I've shot with my 500mmAF at temperatures down to -35?F with no troubles other than battery drain.
Now, given that Al thinks that 50?F is seriously cold, what do you have in mind?
