  Q. photography travel workshops

Asked by CJ McKendry    (K=1388) on 9/17/2002
I'm considering attending a travel/nature photography workshop. Sooo many options advertised in some magazines I receive, and no experience with this sort of thing has me hesitating. Anyone care to share experiences they've had with these workshops? Did this work for you, or are you better off traveling on your own? Thanks in advance for your help.

CJ, what you get from any workshop depends on several factors. First, your motivation to actually learn. Second, your instructor's ability to provide you with motivation. Third, the ability of the place to provide you with motivation. Forth, your ability to pay the fee.

I've attended a few workshops, and taught a number of them. As an instructor, I've always learned something from those who attended my workshops, and that is always exciting to me. Each person has a different perspective and I enjoy seeing what other people shoot; frequently someone will see something I didn't!

Pick a workshop in a place you want to be in. Try to find an instructor who is a good teacher (ASK other people about her/him once you decide upon a particular workshop. Ask the instructor for some references of people who have attended previous workshops with them).

Don't expect everything to be perfect. Weather can seriously affect nature workshops. The size of the group is extremely important. If it's too large, don't expect much individual attention.
