  Q. How can a "friend" not be a member?
Roger Williams
Asked by Roger Williams   Donor  (K=86139) on 2/16/2009
Last week I got mail from Usefilm telling me that a Matt Pritchard had chosen to add me to his "friends." As I usually do, I tried to visit his portfolio to see if I should return the compliment, but Usefilm returns a "no such photographer found" in reply to my search. How is this possible? I can understand someone who is not posting photos himself wanting to see the photos of others, but such people show up in searches. What's going on? (I even searched through all the "Matt"s to see if he was in under another name, but couldn't see anything likely.)

This question was posted 4 months ago and no admin has answered as yet - I guess they have long holidays in UseFilm land

I think Usefilm is on permanent "hold," Jonathan. If the numbers of photographers reported to be currently on line are true, then Usefilm is probably generating enough ad-click income to keep the site alive (and I certainly hope so) but maybe not enough incentive to encourage much interaction. I have also been quite unhappy with the actual interactions I got in the past, which was a real surprise to me, as I came from a position of wanting to help and being willing to put the necessary time and effort into doing so.

Maybe the mail didn't really come from usefilm? Did you click a link in the mail, or use a bookmark to get here? Possibly a link in that mail might have been spam or worse, phishing for instance. In the latter case they would have been trying to get your password. Or maybe it did come from usefilm, which is reporting over 4000 users at 10am. Kurt

Wow, Kurt, that never even occurred to me. Fortunately I just signed into Usefilm as usual, so I don't think I got caught. And what would they gain from my password in such a case? Just access to my Usefilm account... much good may it do them! [grin] As you will doubtless know, Usefilm is also protected by a spam-barrier input requirement that can only be overcome by determined and resourceful spammers...

Or the person's account got deleted for some reason in between the time he added you as a friend and you tried to visit his portfolio.

Possible, I suppose, but highly unlikely. I responded immediately I got the mail, so he wouldn't have long to change his mind from wanting a friend to wanting out.

This was an email? Or a message from usefilm's messaging system? Email headers can be easily spoofed, but probably not the internal messaging system. It is interesting that no administrator has visited this conversation.

Hi, Kurt. You found him! Wonder if he still wants to be friends?
Maybe the whole thing was just the search engine not firing on all cylinders? [shrug]
