Q. Basic digital questions (limited computer knowledge)!

I use computers everyday but stay only in the operation and don't know much about the functions and connections, etc. I realize that to go digital, I have to buy a new computer (my old is too slow), and very good ink jet printer like an Epson 2200, and perhaps the highly regarded film scanner(Nikon Coolscan 4000). I'm ready to roll!! I'm a little bit intimidated with connecting these stuffs specially that "interface card" with the 4000! I hate to admit it. I even consider waiting for my daughter to come back from college to connect these items. Is this relatively easy to do?

The only thing you need to go digital is an open USB port, and a memory card reader. That's a really easy connection. You don't need a scanner for your digital camera images, nor do you necessarily need a printer, so you can wait for your daughter to come home to set that part of your system up. Meanwhile, you can get familiar with using your new digital camera, and the digital darkroom. Which editing program are you considering?

There are a number of beginning digital camera sites on the web that will walk you through everything, step by step. As an example, here's a good one:

Go for it, you won't regret it!

It doesn't sound like you're dealing with a digital camera. So...
The printer is easy to install whether you're using a Mac or a Windows machine. I ran into an issue with the latest OS X and the included Epson driver, it was out of date. A quick peek on Epson's site and I found the latest printer driver and all was well. It's actually probably a pretty good idea to not use the driver on the cd that comes with the printer anyway. Grab the latest from the Epson web site before you try to install the printer.
A quick look at the scanner specs, shows that the Nikon scanner you want is firewire based. Most new computers these days have both USB and Firewire ports already built in. All you'll need to is plug it in. Macs will be a bit more friendly than Windows but the install should be painless.
If you have an older computer, you'll probably need to run out a buy a Fireware adapter card. Cards are relatively easy to install. Open your machine and stick into an available PCI slot. On the next startup, Windows will tell you it found new hardware and ask you for the driver disk. When you open your machine, remember to pull the plug either out of the wall or out of the power supply.

I have a Kodak DX4330 with the whole setup. Other than power adapters, everything is hooked up via USB. These days, they can't make it much simpler to set up a veritable digital darkroom on your desktop.
