  Q. Portrait Challenge ---- show me some links or post some!
Bob Jarman
Asked by Bob Jarman    (K=3145) on 3/12/2003
On of our members, a very good photographer who shall remain unnamed, has challenged me to find a good portrait taken with a digital SLR where the eyes are truly alive.

He doesn't think we can do it!

Trust me, I can't shoot portraits, but I know some of you can, so help me out here. Post some or gimme some links!

Thanks

Taken with an older D30, NON-L Canon Lense.

Standard Novatron lights.

A little dark. Just an example of a mediocre run of the mill Digital photo.

One Novatron thru a softbox, and a white lighting (1600) thru silk on the right.

Very alive :)

Well, here's a deal - get him to show us an example of what he means, and then we'll take him on! In the meantime, here's a couple. First, a classic 'deer-in-the-headlights', excuse-the-dribble flash shot..

..and second, a more conventional, bit of fill-flash shot.

Both were taken with a Sony DSC-F717, on the first day I got it, experimenting madly!

Though he doesn't use a dslr, Rui Palha has demonstrated that digitial cameras are as fully capable of capturing the eyes as film cameras. Here's an example from his Photosig portfolio:

Taken with a Nikon D100 with a Nikklor 35mm f/2 lens. Lighting was one large softbox and one white reflector.

I suggest checking out Richard Armstrong's photo on this site:

Don't know if I linked that correctly, but you can go to his portfolio of 2 great images. By the way, this image was taken with a 2 MP digital! Amazing!
