Clive -- check out this article: http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/580ex/ There are some new features on the 580EX including a few that do not work with 5D. One big difference is increased light output (effective guide number) and better power conservation. --Jan

the biggest problem is that the 540 EZ wont work in TTL on the 5D. The EZ series flashes were made for film cameras - there are differences between the way film and digital sensors reflect light - so in TTL mode the EZ cameras will only work on a small number of settings on a digital body.
