Q. Canon speedlights

Is there any appreciable differences (apart from cost) between the 540EZ and 580EX speedlights (I am using a 5D)?

Speedlight is a registered trademark of Nikon...

ALWAYS get the most powerful you can afford, and if that isn't the most powerful on the market you may want to consider saving up.

There are some new features on the 580EX including a few that do not work with 5D. One big difference is increased light output (effective guide number) and better power conservation.

the biggest problem is that the 540 EZ wont work in TTL on the 5D. The EZ series flashes were made for film cameras - there are differences between the way film and digital sensors reflect light - so in TTL mode the EZ cameras will only work on a small number of settings on a digital body.
