Q. Searching for a new digital camera

I have an old MInolta that uses film. I have a Canon S50 that won't hold the battery's life and I have a Fuji FIne Pix that I lost the battery charger.
I am not a pro but just an amateur that has the passion for photography, that is all. I don't do a lot of prints but mostly simple editing; cropping that is all. I prefer the raw material that has no manipulation.
So, I am looking into buying a good digital camera that is under $600. Nothing bulky as I do lots of on a shoestring traveling, camping, hiking and outdoor activities. I am leaning more towards between SLR or Compact Camera. But I don't like the interchangeable lenses. Also, would prefer that the camera uses AA battery. I am not too much about the fancy buttons stuff. All I care is good crisp clear picture.
I like Canon or Nikon. Any recommendation? Thank you!
