  Q. What about Fuji"s plant closings??

Asked by Chuck Freeman    (K=13616) on 2/2/2006
On Tuesday, Fuji announced it's closing of a plant that employs about 200 people. This is big news in this area since I only live about 50 miles from Greenwood South Carolina where this seemingly prosperous Fuji Co Plant has been the pride of that community.
I am not certain about exactly what was manufactured there in Greenwood-but I have always heard it was Film.
Does anyone know? I was hoping Fuji Would stay if Possible-WHATS GOING ON AND WHERE DO WE FILM USERS GO IF "MOST" FILM IS DISCONTINUED?

Hi Chuck,

Fuji Photo are having a bit of a global thinning down - they are 'streamling personnel'. Their digital camera business isn't going as well as they had hoped, and film isn't doing all that well either. They say that they are still committed to film, but that they are reducing production capacity.

The Greenwood plant did make color film and color paper, as well as 'QuickSnap' cameras.

Keep going my friend!

Best,
Helen

OH My Dear Lord:
Please spare Fuji. I just purchased a new 35mm yesterday.

Fuji is laying off 5000 people, most in manufacturing facilities for digicams and film in Japan.
Film production is winding down ("reduction in capacity"), digicam production is shifted to the PRC to reduce cost (I don't know if the 5000 is all the layoffs or whether the number of new people hired in China has been subtracted from it in which case the total layoffs will be much higher).
Of course they say they're "dedicated to film", but remember that Nikon said the same right up to the moment they ditched all but one of their cameras last month (and that one to be available only in 2 regions, not in Australasia region)!
