  Q. Is this show a SCAM? Help

Asked by Marcy Massura    (K=1848) on 8/26/2004
Recently I submitted via e-mail 5 of my photoart peices to a gallery requesting digital photography for a show. They responded after several weeks, saying I was accepted and that they take 30% of all sales made during the show. I am pretty sure 30% is high-but this would be my first show ever and it is in a pretty popular San Francisco gallery. What do you think guys?
Thanks

Not unreasonable. Some galleries will take even more... after all, they are standing most of the overhead in any sale.

Submitted via e-mail - are they doing the printing, framing, etc.? I've heard of coffee houses taking 20% and galleries taking 50%, so it sounds reasonable to me.

I am not one of the "guys"; however this woman view is that 30 % is not bad, as other galleries get up to 50 -60 %.

Why not check them out with the better business assication in that city.

Better find out if they acquire or retain rights to the photographs after the show. In other words, do they have the right to collect a portion of future sales of prints. I would not feel safe about doing what you just did. The 30-70 split is fairly reasonable, though, because they are the ones who pay the overhead and other costs.
