  Q. Associations etc.
James McGinnis
Asked by James McGinnis    (K=6045) on 7/25/2004
In this world of over-inlated credentialling I am contemplating the value of various photographic association memberships. There is no doubt, that the membership itself can be a valuable marketing tool for the photographer, but how much does the average consumer know about these various affiliations? My guess is that they're just seeing a bunch of initials and are expected to be sufficiently and appropriately impressed.

I guess what I'm asking is....are these memberships worth the money? Or, more specifically, which ones are worth the money (and respected) and which are not?

I think they're worth the money. At least PPA, WPPI, and NAPP. The local state associations are a good way to get to know what's going on in your area, too.

I've been a member of PPA on and off through the years. Being a member also helps motivate me improve my photography skills and gives me an opportunity to recruit assistants/staff. I feel those that are active in these associations are more serious about getting better... professionally. I also feel displaying your membership/association seal on marketing materials adds that extra stamp of credibility to you work.
