  Q. About Photography Grants
nothing nothing
Asked by nothing nothing    (K=557) on 12/3/2003
Hi, I'm a high school student and I am doing a project involving a lot of expensive photography equipment that I can't afford. Can anyone suggest a photography grant foundation? It would help so much, thank you.

jarrod: i'm a photo teacher with no budget and 22 students. suggest following: contact local masonic lodge, lions clubs, and kiwanas and make presentations at meetings i.e. show your work. I've had students go in with a box of 8 x 10's and leave with complete systems and offers of "gigs for $" no fooling. join photo chat groups and do the begging. make friends with local newspaper editor, join school newspaper and yearbook. Your art teacher could cut a form letter on school stationary which individual donors can use as tax write offs. you are fortunate to be interested in film photo when many are dumping analog gear for digital. prices have fallen through the floor. to recover minimal value "donation" to worthy causes. Seek status as an "independent-study" art student taking classes for credit. By end of year nearly all my students have been able to obtain cameras following some of the above suggestions. rules are: never say no. always write a thank you note. and what you can't use is passed on to those who can, with the understanding that they do the same for you. lastly, visit local camera swap meets (check with camera stores in your area for dates and locations.) babaphoto@juno.com
