  Q. Photo Editing Software
Dawn Chadwick
Asked by Dawn Chadwick    (K=347) on 2/16/2003
Hi, I was hoping someone could let me know what is the best photo editing software for up to $60. I've been using PhotoPro Deluxe, but it doesn't have all the capabilities I would like.

Basically I want the works. I want to be able to touch up my photos or even completely alter them If I wanted to.

I have heard people talking VERY highly about Photoshop Elements for the price. They didn't want to pay for Corel or Photoshop. They said they can do what they need to do in thier digital workflow (most of them are shooting with the D100) And have been able to find Photoshop Elements for 9 dollars after all the rebates.

Since 1997, I used a lot of photo softwares, including Adobe's Photoshop.

For the money, you can't beat Microsoft's Picture It. It is very easy to use or user friendly, and produced good quality images.

But please note, to get good images, you must start with good resources. No software will guaranteed an excellent results from bad media (scratch, faded or old negatives, slides, and pictures). Even though they enhanced it a great deal from its orginal poor quality, they are not miracle workers. ie, sharpen images from unsharpen media. Or, you
may see some side effects depending what software you are you using.

Try Picture Window Pro from Digital Light and Color on http://www.dl-c.com/
You'll find a tutorial on http://www.normankoren.com/PWP_intro.html

You can download a 30 day trial. Cheaper and easier than Photoshop and aimed at the photographer instead of the graphic artist like Photoshop.

If you want to use to monitor work (not professional typography), try the gimp (gimp.org).
