  Q. photo developing - throwing back photos

Asked by Meryl Paul    (K=122) on 8/29/2002
I was reading posts from earlier about where people get their photos processed and a few people mentioned "throwing back" photos at places like Wallgreens.

What exactly does this mean?

Also, do most camera shops offer to develop negatives only for less cost?

Hi Meryl

I believe that when people refer to throwing photos back at the printers, they mean asking for a reprint because of quality issues with the originals.

As for your second question, I don't know how it is in the US, but here in the UK most places won't offer this service, though pro-shops certainly will.

"throwing back" i would assume, as said, probably means rejecting a print and demanding corrections, which is a silly thing to do at a place like walgreens, cvs, in my opinion, what do you expect for that kind of money~ as for dev only most places will do it, costs less, but keep in mind u still really dont have much idea what the images look like in reality without the prints, i find the distance between 36negs and 36scans is about a million miles when you have to scan it yourself, slides being a better option since the scans are 10x better and you dont have to guess which ones are worth scanning/getting prints done of/etc etc

Many places (Wal Mart included I belive) will let you look through your prints, and if there are ones you do not like or turned out badly, you can just give them back and not pay for those prints- I know people who do this all the time.
I'm guessing that most professional photography stores will develop negatives only. The one I use does that for B&W for $5 instead of $11 for prints. Just ask them. As for places like Walgreens, i doubt it.
