Q. Lens Difficulty, with text!

Sorry about the last, I inadvertently hit [ENTER].
I have a 10-year-old 35-70mm Ricoh zoom that has developed myopia! If I set the focusing ring to infinity, my split-ring focusing shows I'm in focus when the object is about 20-25 feet away. I've two camera bodies, and another zoom, so I verified it _was_ this zoom.
Is my hope that I need a new lens good? Has anyone else experienced this, and do you know the cause? My equipment is mostly manual, so it's a little more resistent to the "dings and arrows of outrageous fortune", and anyway, I'm not given to drop-testing my equipment! 8-)
Thanks, --Rich

90% of the time when someone shows me a camera/lens that won't focus its because of a diopter that accidentally got tweaked, leaving the eyepiece out of focus. The fact that you've already looked into this situation carefully and that its happening on 2 bodies makes my explanation much less likely, but i thought i'd throw it out there for you anyway, good luck~

Thanks, Terrence -- I'll keep your suggestion in mind for "future use" 8-). It does seem to be the lens. I replaced it Saturday, after running some tests. It seems the lens can't focus farther than 8 feet, but I CAN focus down to 8 _inches_, instead of the stated 1.5 feet on the barrel!
Thanks again, --Rich

It may be that the focusing collar has come loose from the front element - without knowing the lens, look for set screws (often hidden under the rubber grip) that may be loosened to allow you to slide it around. Warning - dissassembly of zoom lenses is not for the faint of heart! But it sounds as if you can't make it much worse, unless you really wanted a macro-only lens.. :)
