  Q. Need help buying tripod
ANANDA NIYOGI
Asked by ANANDA NIYOGI   Donor  (K=4486) on 4/10/2008
I need some suggestion for buying a tripod for my Nikon D70 camera. Please give your suggestions for brands and also the best place to buy them. Thanks a lot in advance.

You can't go wrong with a Manfrotto 190 series (many options depending on your needs and budget) and a decent ballhead (the 488RC series are good, several models differing only in the type of plate).

That's what I use mainly, despite also having a heavier 055PRO with a large 3 way head.
That one's just too heavy for everyday use, reserved for when I need the extra size and weight (like when shooting in strong wind).

Thank you very much for your response. I was looking at Manfrotto 725B
which has a built in ball head. Do you think that series is good or do you recommend the 190 series.

I don't know that one. But generally tripods with separate heads are of higher quality (and more flexible of course as you can get several heads if you need them and switch between them).

Manfrotto lists the 72x series as being designed for "small, sub-SLR cameras and small videocameras". It'll be too flimsy to support a D70, especially when you put larger/heavier lenses on it.

Hi Ananda! I also use the Manfrotto 190 with a D70s. Currently has a large 3-way head on it which is heavy but good if you're not in a hurry and for panos. Would consider also a trigger-grip head for lighter / faster work eg. 322.

maybe it's time for a family shot, D70s on the 190, D200 on the 055, and place them in front of a mirror

Thanks a lot for your comments. So I guess 190 series is the way to go.

And if you're interested, I've got a Manfrotto 808RC4 head for sale for EUR 100. Though I'm not sure how easy it would be to ship to the States...
