  Q. What film should i use?
Davy Bruyninckx
Asked by Davy Bruyninckx    (K=-24) on 12/1/2005
Hi everybody!
This coming Sat. I have a modelshoot coming up. My very first one. Although i have shot numerous portraits and bodyshots (of family, you know how that goes), I consider this to be my first "formal" one. I've never met the model, only talked to her via email. Any sugestions regarding working with new models is very welcome. I now that some of the Pros. have pre-shoot appointment to kinda get to "know" the model, but this is not one of my options.
Secondly and certainly not any less important, i'm in dubio as to which film i should use. My preference would be Fuji Reala or Kodak Portra 160 VC. Both films i consider very well suited for the job. Although Reala is just a tad sharper, big enlargements will not be an issue. 8x10 is probaly the biggest one. Both films i've used in the (recent) past with great results. I scan all my negs, i stopped having them printed by labs for their inconsidired work. Both films scan nicely with Portra having the slight adavantage. Let me emphasize on the slight for the differences are often so marginal that they can be niglected. I've seen that Reala works very well with mixed light conditions. I will be using flash. Portra i prefer with an abundance of natural light minimazing the usage of flash. I'd love to hear from you...

Sorry I didn't see this one a bit sooner. I prefer to use Fuji NPC 160 for portraiture, I find it has slightly more contrast than NPS. I've never used the Kodak portrait film, but I hear good things about it.

Take a couple of different films along and experiment if you can.

All the best for the shoot.

I replied to this question before, don't know where that has disappeared to????
My suggestion is Kodak Portra 160VC for colour, but also take along some B+W film (my preference is Kodak Tri-X or Plus-X) for some monochrome shots. Using a green filter with either of these films will give a 60's sort of David Bailey look.
Very effective.
