About	not necessary to have your small subject in DOF ,when I was seareching for small insects by stalking my 50 normal lense on my 200 maicro lense I found thes small insect with a size of 3mm i found its ok to photograph it face as long as my magnification ratio is at least 4X. The use of the flash was important to avoid the shake

i couldn't help but to give another comment on this photo! this insect looks like a mantis! i don't know if there is a 3 mm mantis but it sure looks like one!
whatever the insect is you've managed to get a very beautiful photo... you're right about the DOF.. it's not always necessary to have the whole object in focus... well done my friend and good luck
