About This is a cool little bay along the Great Ocean Road. Just not sure if I like this one either, what do you think I could have done to improve it?

I like what Petros said about this shot as it applies to all our efforts in general. When we are our own harshest critics and biggest fans we will get to that place where the "masses" will admire our work but we will know the secret effort rerquired to get the shot. You are there...P. -mm

Nice shot, the whole coastline is stunning in this area, the shipwreck history of the area is fascinating.

Best wishes to you both

@ Peta: I feel Petros has a good point here, and am pleased you are on the front page. Take care Neil

Peta,

As Petros said, it's all about the light. I've stood in roughly the same spot as you and could probably find a very similar image in my files. I've been there at different times of the day and different times of the year but never found the "right" light either. You've done very well within the constraints that presented themselves when you were there.

hmm well Peta given that so many people died in the wreck I am not sure about the cool. I have however stood where you stood and thought of how difficult it was to photograph..I will if I remember scan a print from the GOR series and let you know

I really appreciate that sam! The Loch Ard Ship was wrecked just off here in 1878 and only 2 survived washed up on this beach. The Southern Ocean is hard core along this coastline!

Peta, I know I am no expert, I do know that from the moment I Look at this Picture, my eyes were drawn through it perfectly, I Like the way it flows. The Colors are great, the cropping is Awesome. I Could see a little skiff beached there and a Pirate ship off in the distance.
You got yourself a Keeper!

Hi Petros, thanks for that. You raised a good point that I've actually been discussing with a couple of my UF mates. Its all about time. One friend remarked that my latest images seem to reflect a new found passion for my photography. Of course they do, but only because I took time off work and played tour guide for Rob and took hundreds of shots together. My passion never fluctuates, its just the opportunities to get out and about shooting that does.

So yes you're right, I can take criticism as I want to learn continously. Just as well because I guess I will end up posting more of these 'no different to the next tourist shots'. Afterall bridging that gap you refer to takes time I dont always have (like so many of us no doubt) but I wont ever stop trying.

Thank you Petros, you always get me thinking and I very much value your thoughts :) Looking forward to that Melbourne get together, just make sure its a perfect light day for me!

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Peta, a very nice photo indeed... Well composed... Exposure is good too...

There used to be a Usefilm member called John Shephard, he was an assistant for Ken Duncan for a number of years, before he returned to America to do his own thing... His photos were all out of this world. What made his photos outstanding was the fact that he'd visit the same location day after day, at like 4.30am to set up, and get the magic morning light... And eventually he always did... He nailed one image after the other. Like I said though he sacrificed a lot to get the "perfect" image... I recall he used to joke that as he was packing up to finally go home, he?d see all the other ?photographers? arrive?

I've noticed that you too tried to ?get in? early in the morning and do all the right things... It will definitely pay off soon enough. You have a great eye, great ideas, and you?re definitely learning the technical side fast enough.

A while ago now, you reached a stage where you can look at your photography a little more objectively (many users here still can't take criticism, even when it's delivered with a silver glove). So, here it goes:

Nothing wrong with what you have shot here, but this is not different to a photo taken by the next tourist with a digital point and shoot that happened to drive by this location. What would make your image stand above the rest, is after having found the location, setting yourself up to capture the ?magic light?.

Not that you don?t know this already, but you should now strive for the perfect image every time (and I think you do anyway). You and I both know of course that many a times this is not practical. After all the great ocean road is not around the corner from where you live? Nor is it practical to wake up and go shooting at 4.30am every day? Knowing the difference though between this image and what you could potentially achieve is important. I guess that it?s all about bridging this gap?

One of these days, I?ll get my act together and try and organize a shoot together with the rest of the Melbourne Usefilmers :-)

Love your stuff!

Yes the black frame adds too the bottom frame of the cliffs..
Nature is the only other thing that could improve the shot.
Would be a great spot to camp out to catch the different light and tide..

Hey peta! I'm really sorry if too intrusive for you... :=( But I'm just poorly congratulated for your warm coloured selfportrait...
I hope you have not taken it amiss!
Best regards.

I tuoi paesaggi sono incredibili, hai realmente la capacità di farci sognare.
Io l'avrei tagliata leggermente più sulla destra, in modo da decentrare il punto di fuga per renderlo più movimentato.

This is stunning. I love the vivid colors. Only thing I could think of is to make the sand a little more "sandy" color. But if this is the color of the beach then definitely not. Whatever, it's a wonderful landscape.
