Inquadratura molto accattivante anche se sembra un po' frettoloso il taglio in postproduzione dello sfondo attorno alle portiere alzate... imho Complimenti, ottimo gioco delle luci. Umberto

Hi Mark, It is a really nice thing that they do every now and then. (featuring a comment) I guess the best thing about it is a lot of people get a little look at the back pages of the portfolios, where they may not normally have time to browse. After all, our most current work is not always our best work. I'm really enjoying the time I spend in this group. Andre

Thanks for commenting Jeanette, I value your critique! I am definitely a fan of your excellent work!
You mention how the white and light parts "bleed out". I created that effect via PS as an experiment and I understand your doubts about the effect. I have some reservations about it too, though on balance I like the effect here. It does take the fine egdes off the image. I was going for a sort of dreamy feeling to the image, something I feel when around these beautiful old cars. I've posted the image below without the effect, as a basis for comparison.
For those interested, in Photoshop I created a 'lighten' layer and blurred it using the Gaussian blur and then erased the layer where I wanted fine detail to show through. The effect creates a sort of glow to the highlights and is most evident around the front bumper, though the effect is present in all the major highlights.

Yes, Andre, being involved in a featured critique is quite nice, with all the additional exposure I have for my images! Thanks for commenting!
I have had one of my comments featured also, and strangely it wasn't one of my more interesting comments. It was part of a larger exchange, as is the case today. I don't know the basis used in selecting a featured critique. But in any case, this is providing a chance for more of our images to be seen, so it is a great thing!! And your images seen on the front page are so beautiful! Don't you just love it here at Usefilm?

Hi Ian, I was a great shot by Mark. I still don't really understand how the comment got to be considered a critique? It was more of an ongoing conversation. Anyway, the front page will give Mark and I some exposure, so I'm not complaining too loudly. Andre

Hi Mark, That was a great time back in the late sixties and early seventies for sports car racing. Jim Hall not only drove the Chaparrals but he was a major designer for all but the 001 model.
Most of the shots you were looking at (birdcage maserati chaparral 001) are new images of old cars from the Lime Rock Vintage car festival on Sept. 3/05 They were not scanned from prints. Just uploaded from the digital xd card and worked on in Photoshop. There are some older scanned images that I took in the seventies of other race cars further back in the portfolio. some scanned from the original negative and some from prints. Andre

Yes Andre, this was the Boston Museum of Fine Arts show. I am not a certifiable car buff, though I have always enjoyed and very much appreciated beautiful cars. And I must say that many of the cars in this exhibit were eye-popping, even to the unintiated such as myself. The '58 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa in particular was very arresting with it's amazing shape. Unfortunatly I didn't get any shots of it worth posting as it was positioned oddly in the exhibit from a photo composition standpoint. My personal fave was the on pictured here, the '55 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe. Used to build plastic models of that car as a kid in the 60's. The McLaren was also a fave (though not really a gullwing I couldn't resist stealing that name for my image of the McLaren here).
Also took a peak at your portfolio and enjoyed a good many many of your classic photos. I especially loved the Chappral. I was a big race fan back when those cars ruled. Jim Hall was a major driver of them I think... I also liked the 'birdcage' shots. Anyway, thanks for the taking time to scan all those old images.
Cheers, Mark

Mark, Excellent shot of this Gullwing! I just read your comment stating that you took this and some other classic car photos at the Ralph Laren collection. Was it the one in Boston this past summer? I almost got a combo hotel & museum package for this back in May and backed out at the last minute because we didn't have quite enough time to spend there. It must have been fantastic, even though there were just a few cars. But WHAT CARS!!! Every one a work of art! If you are a car lover, I have quite a few shots of classics posted that I just took at the Lime Rock Vintage Festival. If you are interested in visiting my portfolio. Andre

Well, I was lucky to get this shot, you're right! This and other car shots posted here were shot at a museum exhibit of Ralph Lauren's car collection, which is VERY extensive. The lighting in the exhibit was not really as high as you would want, but it was quite colorless using a large number of halogen spots throughout the exhibit. Shadows weren't generally a problem, and I went at a time when the crowds were small, which made reflections less of a problem. There are a lot of spotlight reflections in many of my shots, though those provide highlights and show the contours of the cars a bit, so I left them in.
As to the backdrop on this shot, I used photoshop to create most of it. The exhibit walls were a very light gray with some ugly corners, edges, and bad shadows. They could have done a much better job lighting the walls, but as museum exihbit builders, rather than photo studio types, they must have figured that lighting the autos was the thing and who cares about the background. I did a similar treatment on the McLaren shot here as well.
I have a bunch more from that exhibit but what I've posted is probably the best of it. I may do a few more if I get the time and patience to do the post processing I like for these. I have kept my eyes open for more auto show opportunities though as I enjoyed the shooting. I very much admire the fine work you do with autos. It's inspiring, thanks.
Mark

Mila mentions the softness of the lines. I softened the original image a bit in Photoshop by creating a 'lighten' layer and blurring it quite a bit using the Gaussian blur and then erasing the lighten layer where I wanted fine detail to show through. It is a subtle effect but powerful in creating a sort of glow to the highlights. The effect is most readily noticed around the front bumper, but the effect is present in all the major highlights.
