Linda, From what I?ve heard IS technology got its start in the military as a way to keep the large canon on the front of tanks steady while the tanks move over rough terrain. With this technology the tank may be bumping all around, but the canon on the front stays relatively stable. The IS on our lenses works in much the same way, but just on a smaller level. They won?t completely eliminate the need for a tripod, but they do minimize camera shake a lot.

Well I think it's an awesome shot Laurie. I think I might be a little confused about this IS stuff...Isn't part of that design to eliminate having to use a tripod, or is it specifically for faster focusing, I know I better start reading the manuals...hard to find the time...thanks again...:):)Linda

Thanks Linda! I owe a lot of the clarity in this shot to the IS on my lens. I never would have been able to get this shot with a regular lens, but I still had to take a bunch before I got one that looked ok. That will teach me to forget my tripod! :)

What a lovely and inviting scene, Laurie - so tropical-ish! :) The reflections in the water are wonderful, and I love the deep blue of the sky barely illuminating the rooftops.

Given it was without a tripod you have done remarkably well! There is evidence of a little noise in the sky and water and a little softness in the focus on the trees (not surprising with a slow shutter if the trees were moving and no tripod though!). I think if you ran it past a noise filter it would help immensely. I've cropped out a part of it to show you what I mean...
Nicely composed and exposed though Laurie!
