Yeah, it might have been in the conversion. If you just converted it straight to B&W, without any further adjustments, the contrast will drop. Try either playing with the levels, or just increase the contrast. That should help the image "pop" more. If you want it softer, apply that after you adjust the contrast.

As for the background, I guess it's all just personal preference. Adjusting the contrast might help that too.

Thanks, Dan. Can you make some suggestions about the lighting? Is what you're seeing possibly the result of a conversion to B&W, softening, etc?

Great expression on the kid, but the lighting id too flat. Plust I'm not really a fan on those bunched up backgrounds.

Hi, Margaret! I think I saw that one as a matter of fact. My son here really loves balloons! My wife usually takes them to safeway where they get free balloons. I took them a couple of days ago and they went nuts because I didn't "know the routine." I figured it out fast though! ;)

Eric What a lovely smile and composition, great detail and tones. I recently did some similar, it was a red balloon and I left it red and desat the rest it was quite effective.
