About This Side-Striped Palm Pit viper is one of the 17 poisonous snakes of Costa Rica. In this image it's easy to observe 4 characteristics that distinguish non-poisonous snakes from poisonous ones.
#1 and most important, the opening (pit) between the nostrils and the eyes.
#2 the triangular shape of its head
#3 a vertical elliptical (cat-like) shaped pupil.
#4 the scales on her head are the same size like the ones on her body. Most non-poisonous snakes, especially those in the elapidae (corals and cobras) and Colubridae families had head scales larger than body scales.
However there are exceptions to these anatomical features. For example the Boas and Pythons. They have small scales on their heads, triangular shape of its head and vertical elliptical (cat-like)
shaped pupil but they aren't poisonous.
These guys (Side-Striped Palm Pit viper)posses a prehensile tails and are perfectly adapted to arboreal life. Their geographic distribution is limited to the premontane and lowers montane zones of the cordilleras of Costa Rica and Western Panama.

Great capture

Cuidate.
Yamil

Dear Don,
Have a wonderful time in Southern Arizona. Watch out for the rattlesnakes. It will be nice if you can get a shot at them. Not a close up like this one. Just kidding, I know that
Avoiding the rattlesnakes is your first priority. Have fun with your son in Northern Arizona. I will love to see your pictures from the canyons.
Take care.
