About When I posted my Molten Light picture, Richard Dakin suggested I try it in B&W. I never thought to put a sunset in B&W. Thanks for the suggestion, Richard. After trying this, I do like it and hope some of you do, also. There seems to be some cropping needed though as there is quite an expanse to look at which I think detracts from the light. I couldn't seem to find the best place. Suggsetions and comments are most welcome. Thanks for looking.

Excellent lighting Mary, very nice the sky, greyscale adds drama here, works fine to me.
best regards!

I am pleased that you like this, Gary and am complimented that you think it would look good on the wall. I will admit I had to look up what gu bichromate is. There is always something new to learn. Yes, I had a fun holiday with my family. Happy New Year to you.

Hello Mary,

Hope your holidays were good....:) I like this photograph...very nice sky.....I could see it in alternative process....like gum bichromate.....you would have to make an enlarged negative then learn how to coat bichromates..not too tough...your kitchen table would work.

It would hang nicely on your wall in 11x14 or 16/20!! No problem with grain.

Best,

Gary

Nice! The B&W sure works. I don't think I'd crop it because there's a nice pattern in the clouds that fills the whole frame.

Richard, thank you for the suggestion. It would never have dawned on me to switch a sunset to B&W. When I tried it, I liked the result. I'm glad you like it, also.

Wow, I love it!!!!! It gives the scene a wonderfully spiritual feel. I would not crop it at all Mary. Congrats, and thanks for taking my suggestion.

I like all your sunset shots but the choice of black and white is a very good idea.. I would have never thought to do that with a sunset either but now I will have to try. K

I am surprised that I also prefer the B&W version of this photo. It seems to catch more of a sense of drama and suspense and a different mood without the complexities of color. Good work!

This works so well in b&w. I'm not sure that cropping is needed, since the cloud formations are so varied and interesting.

The B&W puts emphasis on tonal quality and composition, and this shot deserves it. I would vote for your B&W version. But you can go a step further and convert to RGB color again after B&W conversion (sounds silly, I know), then apply a warm filter in PS for toning. What do you think ?

this is a cool image, but i do agree there is a little bit too much going on in the picture. have u tried cropping a bit off both sides and the top. and maybe even crop the light foreground out so the bottom of the image starts with the dark hedgeline.....but then thats just one way of doing it, it depends on what you want to say with the image i suppose?? u cud almost crop out all the ground and just leave the tops of the trees at the bottom... i'll stop there i think lol

Thanks, Shane. I have tried a few crops--none that really do it for me. So, I will just try a few more. Boy, I never thought I'd be posting a B&W sunset. Seems like an oxymoron.

Hi Mary,

I think you're on to something you will see a lot more of in Usefilm. B&W sunsets eh? Look really awesome! I love the texture of the sky. As for cropping suggestions, I like the central part of the sky the most, but you need to keep more to show it's texture. I'd say play around and see what works best for your eye.

Hi Mary, I agree with Kay-the cropping is good as is. What fascinates me most about the B&W photo is the sky texture. In that regard I find the sharp light and glare at the center of the frame a little distracting. I wonder how this would look if, in an editing program, you muted that just a bit? Great photo!

WOW! I never would have thought a sunset could be awesome in black and white, but here it is! I wouldn't think you should crop any more- the expanse is telling a story too. This is a real eye catcher, Mary. Well done!
