About
Rock Formations are yet another fascinating art form of Mother Nature. These boulders called "Mettugutta" (Rocksteps Hill) near Hyderabad, is one I drive by every single time I visit my homeland. Late afternoon sun on these boulders was simply divine. These rocks are igneous, granite rocks of the Deccan Plateau in the South Central Indian Peninsula.
According to geologists, such formations are formed billions of years ago, as a result of liquid magma pushing upward into the earth's crust. Magma solidifies to form huge intrusive basoliths. Millions of years of wind and water erosion on the surrounding crust exposes granite, and it weathers slowly along its horizontal and vertical cracks, resulting in these unique rock formations. Interestingly, there is a "Society to Save Rocks" too!! This preservation society tries to curb uncontrolled-quarrying of these wonderful landscapes. Especially because, these rocks take 2,500 million years to get created and in a few days only they can be blown-off into rubble and concrete. http://www.hyderabadgreens.org/rocks.html http://www.geocities.com/indianoceanhyd/
