About Hi All,

Last nightshot of Hong Kong. As you can see, the night was a bit hazy. If this is caused by low clouds, or by pollution, I don't know. Again, this shot was taken without tripod; wedging the camera between the railing and an info plaque. Ofcourse, there are 13 of these shots in a dozen, but I do like the atmosphere.

Actual camera settings:

ISO: 200ASA
Aperture: f/3.5
Shutterspeed: 1/10'
Exposure: 0 EV.

Apart from a minor crop and level tweak no photoshop work (needed, I concluded)

Your comments are, as always, very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Hugo

Dear hugo,
You have right,
That's the distortion made by distances,
I meant some distortion removing technique would Help,
Very Good Work, I like it.

Hi Mohammad, thanks for your suggestions, very enlighting. I'm not sure it would've made a hugo difference, though. A higher ISO would've created more noise, and eventhough I didn't have a tripod, the camera was securely wedged. With a tripod I might've used an f/11 to f/22, with an exposure of several seconds. I believe that would've made the difference you hint at.

I'm curious what you mean byor have in mind about the straightening you mention, the PoV - lens combination create a downward third vanishing point, which make the skyscrapers stick out like needles, but the horizon (as far as I can tell, you can't really see it) is quite straight already

Cheers,

Hugo

Mohammad Porooshani Mohammad Porooshani   {K:20765} 4/20/2006
Well,
Dear Hugo,
I think it needs a little straightening and looks it needs more exposure, I think you need Slower shutter speed like 1/3 or even slower and greater Aperture like 5.6 with an greater Iso like 300,
It's just my suggestion, Maybe Braketing be a real good alternative for when we can't use a tripod,
I like it very much,
Well done to you,
Best wishes,
Mohammad

Wow Hugo!

Without looking through the comments, I can only guess that someone has mentioned Blade Runner, or Syd Meade. This is *stunning* to say the least!

Great composition!!!

It looks like a project that I've been biddign on is going to take me to Hong Kong in a few weeks, and seeing this makes me so excited for any free time I'll have to take pictures!

Outstanding image my friend! One of teh best Hong Kong skylines I've ever seen! Very noice control over the exposure, not letting it too 'glowy'.

Well done!

cheers,
-joel

It's a beautiful shot, Hugo. Well worth the contortions you had to go through to get it. You could reduce the haze a bit by playing around with levels and contrast. I made a little example, and hope you like it.
WEll done!

nice shot from the peak hugo. this is precisely the same look i'll be going for when i go to hong kong later this week. unfortunately it looks a bit too cloudy here in shenzhen right now, and the weather here is often the same in hong kong. hopefully it will improve soon as i'm running out of time.

Looking through these accounts we can find thousands of nightshots from city landscapes, the great majority of them being really bad pictures.
This one caught my attention and that foggy cast over the city makes it special.
Great picture.

Hi Hugo,
I have just come across this wonderful picture and thought I should add my bit to all the others. It is a shot to be proud of and much better than my own one from the same location. I watched night fall, over about an hour and a half from the peak once and did not capture the mood that you have. It is the atmosphere which adds the magic. congratulations.

Ahh, Ok, I see it now. At first glance it looks like just the two buildings side by side with the identical blue lit structures superimposed on it. Now I can see that it is the top of two shorter buildings and the blue light almost hides that fact. I just had to look closer.

  0

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 1/19/2005
Hi Christine, thanks for your comments! In answer to your question, which two blue things are you referring to? The two, almost identical blue shapes on the left the appartment that almost seems ablaze? Those are lit parts of the buildings. On top of them, there is a smaller penthouse and a few service buildings, which are lit, too.

Cheers,

Hugo

Peggy Christine Skinner Peggy Christine Skinner   {K:26936} 1/19/2005
Spectacular view Hugo. Everything from the perspective to the colours and detail and technical aspects are dead on. I can see that the smaller building which looks ablaze is probably Christmas lights strung on the balconies but I don't quite understand the two blue, what looks like a cluster of buildings are, reflections? and how they are exact.

Well then, I'll take this one as the 14th. I think the haze makes it stand out, and an excellent exposure. Some highlights are exploded, but heck... this is close to what the eye sees and how the brain reacts.

  0

Alastair Bell   {K:29571} 1/11/2005
Great shot Hugo! A few of the highlights are a little blown out but thats not easy to avoid with night photography. This is a superb image though and one I would be proud to have in my own portfolio!

  0

Saeed Al Shamsi Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47735} 1/11/2005
Perspective is an artistic technique, long in the tooth. Used by painters to have exploited the illusion of perspective to give their images depth and suggest distance or heights ,this can be applied to the photography as effectively, and that?s applied to the composition of your night shot, the sky scrapers with their eliminated shapes do a vanishing point of feature to attract a viewer?s eye .What I like in this image is the point of view ,leaving the other minors things which effected by the Aperture and the natural haze and is not effecting on the good quality and result of this image. Saeed

Hi Paolo, thanks for your comment; you're also always nice to me....;o) I really appreciate your remark about the Smoothness; I know exactly what you mean. Interesting observation about the rotated A shaped composition, something I'll pay more attention to, as I have a feeling there's more to it than meets the eye....

Cheers,

Paolo De Maio   {K:34932} 1/10/2005
I agree with you. I like this one because the atmosphere is so elegant and "smooth"... you know what I mean?
the geometrical compositions of the buildings and the lighted skyline made the shot like an "A" rotated of 90? CW on the left.
My best compliments
Paolo

Hi Thilo, good to hear from you again! This shot was taken without tripod, but I've become pretty creative and adept at wedging my camera between objects to keep it steady... Although it reduces my options (I preferably keep the shutterspeed as short as possible, so I'll go for a wide aperture) it saves me the hassle of carrying a tripod wherever I go....

Cheers,

Hugo

Omar Rifaat   {K:10141} 1/9/2005
Hugo,
Im not a techincal guru, but I like this shot very much. I think the haze is a positive and I like the contrast between the clear foreground and hazy backgound' it makes it a little easier for the mind to take in all the lights and buldings. I often use a polarising filter to 'manage' haze, but I have no idea if it has any effect at night.. i might try next time. I agree with the suggestions about a different frame (I think plain black might do the trick).
I too have a technique of balancing (but not wedging) my camera on railings, and I use a cable shutter release to minimse shake.
Regards,
omar

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 1/9/2005
Hi Toni, How I wished this was the view from my room.... Unfortunately, the Peak is a quite touristy place, and the view point even has it's own "Madame Tussauds". Hundreds, if not thousands of people visit the Peak to admire the view over Hong Kong... And that's their due right, as the view sure is mesmerising... Hope to see it again soon.

As to the rest of your comment, it doesn't happen often, but your comment made me speechless for a while.... It's definately not what I strive for; by commenting, and thinking out loud about an image, I tend to get a grasp of what I like and dislike about a photo. With that, and trying to improve my own photos, I hope to learn alot... It's not more than likely that I'll comment on your work more often, as I feel intrigued by how versatile and professional your work looks. What I like most is the different things you pursue in photography; very inspiring...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo,
my memories about hong kong will be even more beautiful now. The peak - one of the most enchanting views I have ever seen in my life. And I am ready to bet one of the most photographed landscapes in the world has harly been portrayed in such an maing way.
It was hazy indeed in those days, both in the morning and in the evening - I was told that is typical in December.

Hello Hugo!
Thanks for Your recent comments!
Aside from being a very good night photo what I really like is the fog or haze or pollution that gives this photo a dreamy kind of mood! And although it difuses the light and colors it also makes You search through the fog to find the many colors and shapes and reflections and I think that is what adds to the appeal of this wonderful photograph!
Very nice job with the creative makeshift tripod!
Take care My Friend!My best..........JOHN

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique First, let me say that this is spectacular to me. If this were the view from my window, I could sit for hours with a glass of wine and a friend and feel as if I were in heaven. Next, your expression, "13 of these in a dozen," is priceless--never heard it before. When I first came to Usefilm, you came to comment on something I did, and I was so honored, because from looking at your expression (in your personal photo), at your awards, and at your portfolio, I immediately thought of some college professors when I was younger who had so much experience and we students would all sit in awe, and hope we could not only learn, but earn their favor. So your good marks made me feel like I'd just gotten an "A," and I was all fired up that you'd paid me a visit. Well you just did it again recently, and I was just as honored. I hope you will do it more often...and I'm not just asking for your approval...I love to get good quality critiques from the best. T.

yes, probably a frequently framed scene, but quite nice nonetheless. the natural looking light and colors and haze give the shot a lovely look.

The crispness of the buildings stands in such contrast to the soft diffusion of the fog, Hugo.
This is beautiful!

This reminds me of a background they used on the Tonight show...Johnnie Carson.
I like the defused look created by the fog, leaving the foreground in fine detail.
Extremely well done, especially being hand held.

A good... series ;) I envy you because your night shots are very fine, beautiful colors and lights, no noise, excellent details, maybe the composition is not very original (I liked more the first in the series, really pretty and full of joy and happiness), but I like it as well for their great quality and for the perfect framing. Bye, Max

Nightshots (especially from this kind of vantage point) do tend to look a little similar after a while. I think what you need is a unique and interesting element and this image has it (for me) in those blue-lit roof tops. Everything else seems just to be their surroundings after I noticed them (which was almost immediately :-)

if I were you I wouldnt change a thing I love this picture makes me feel like I stepped inside a painting. As far as the fog mist or pollution it works for the fading away of the picture

Excellent shot Hugo... Love the composition... The haze IMO helps to create tension in the picture... Great details and colors..You managed very well to hold still the camera, as this was a difficult shot with so many lights... Love the view of the bay... I thought this kind of shots required a little more time of exposition... So I will take note of your settings, for the time I can encouter a good place with the altitude needed for a shot like this... Haven't found any yet here is Puerto Rico... LOL!!!! :(

Happy new Year 2005!!!!!

Cheers,

Maria

Hugo... I commented this... but... again... where?s my comment? Just because I referred to this picture of Shopkeepers III ( image #329352), when you shot "from the hip"?
Well, I used it to remember how good you are with handheld captures!!! And that is not surprising you being succesful with a night picture handheld!!

Sometimes... UF mades me upset..

Cheers, Hugo.. as I said before, IMO this is the best of the three HK night views.
Your friend,
Carmem

Fantastic view of a very busy city : I read today that HK is almost choking : so ,probably it is pollution. Nevertheless in your image it just add an aura of mistery above the cityscape.
Love it. Ciao,Ck

WOnderful shot of the City. HK is a fantastic place but the haze is always a problem due to the high humidity; thankfully is not pollution :) You really captured the essence of the City, well done! Regards, Rafael
PS, thanks for your comment on Rocky Road. BTW all of your work is AMAZING, congratulations.

hugo, very nice! i like this view of HK as it's not as "popular". don't really see it from this angle very often (at least i have not). i think the humidity helps here in a number of ways: adding mood and more importantly, allows you to shot this at f/3.5 with an improvised support (sans tripod). if it was clear the softness in the background would (might) become more obvious or out-of-place. very well done! i'm still amazed at your ability to pull these off (esp. at night!).

take care,
tom

Thanks Michael, Good to hear. You have a point with the frame, I'm always struggling with frames. I tried to go without one for a while, but didn't like that either. I guess the more simple a frame, the better. I'll try something different next time...

Cheers,

Hugo

The atmosphere improves the photograph by bringing out the colors and the lights from the tops of the buildings. Impressive shot, and I appreciate another photographer who uses the good old "grip and bind" strategy for steadying their camera.

Perhaps the dark blue of the frame should be a different color - dunno. Photograph is pretty solid with a nice down angle.

Hi Jeff, I have spent way too much money on shitty tripods, big and small; If I take one, I take a very good one, but they tend to be either very expensive, or too heavy to carry around, so I usually head out without a tripod. I've developed quite a skill in wedging te camera and holding it still.

Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Melisa, thanks for your comment; the two windows seem to be ablaze indeed, I wondered about that too when I opened this image. But if they were, I would've noticed the uproar when I took the shot. As I took it late December, I can only think that those flames are the result of overexposing on christmas decorations...

Cheers,

Hugo

Yes! Well spotted Antiono! You are absolutely correct. Not sure I could've done anything about the overexposure in the bright parts, though, unless I metered differently in another shot, and superimposing the two. I knew those parts would overexpose, but I didn't want to lose more of the details in the dark parts either. I struggled with the whitebalance a bit; as the christmas decorations had a much warmer glow than the neon and the searchlights that rise from the two tall towers, illuminating the sky above the city. I had to make some consessions...;) Secondly, I do have some dust spots on my sensor, and I think you are referring to that. Thanks for your analysis! Very much appreciated, as always!

Cheers,

Hugo

This is a gorgeous shot Hugo. I like the haze which I feel really brings out the front buildings. The shortest building in the foreground looks like it is on fire towards the top floor. Is that just a lighting blur or is that where the smoke and haze is coming from? Another great shot from you.. thanks for sharing!

I LOVE THIS NIGHT PHOTOGRAPH!!!

Hugo, an EXCELLENT job on this one. PErfect exposure, wonderful details. I like the 'layers of clarity' in this one.

Beautifully lit buildings with gorgeous colors and they fade away gracefully in the distance.

THIS IS OUTSTANDING. I think this is your best, this one appeals to me BIG TIME!!

Very nice job Hugo,
Lori :)

Antonio Trincone   {K:23167} 1/7/2005
Wow Hugo this is spectacular one even though I find two minor issues I am going to talk about; first is a bit overexposition where the strong light occurred at the top of the four major building and the one on the bottom which has in contrast very tungsten-like "color"; the second issue is a spot which could be sensor-related (but it is not quite sure at f4.0). it is located in the haze starting from the left in the middle-right line connecting the blue top building with the third.

The haziness adds to the athmosphere. Gives it just a bit more than the other 12 in the dozen.. ;) Nice shot again. And remember.. Lack of originality just means that a lot of people like the image.;)
Anyhow, an other great shot!

I know how hard it is to make a clear shot in a big city like this. Fog and smog everywhere makes the image ... fogy... But this one shows only some fogy limed made by light and thed don't disturbe at all. well balanced and composed. And perfectly bright.
