Enas, somehow I figured you'd know a lot more about this than I :-) Anyway, the English-language guide books refer to the area as Coptic Cairo, hence why I used that designation. I had a fantastic time exploring Cairo for 3 days just solid walking (and then another 2 weeks travelling in other parts of Egypt).

yes kip i know what exactly u r talking about but in egypt we call this area "al fostat" which is a name of one of the oldest capitals of egypt in the early islamic govering era.. this erea has the oldest jewish tomb, the biggest ancient cherch and the first islamic mosque in cairo.. so thats why we dont call it the coptic cairo.. its more to be called the "religions compound"..
welcome to egypt kip and happy new year

Hi Enas, coptic cairo is the area in Cairo which is historically christian and where the majority of related churches are found. It's a pretty old area with lots of narrow alleys, markets and street life that are a pleasure to wander through.
