Matt: I know this isn't very helpful, but I really don't have any favourite places to shoot around here. In fact, I do most of my shooting when I travel. There's no shortage of beautiful places in Vancouver; I suppose it depends what you want to shoot. If it's more people and architecture, perhaps do a comparitive study of two different "buroughs" (i.e. Abbotsford vs. the West End). If it's more nature, then start visiting parks and going on hikes. At this time of year, the salmon runs are ramping up, so that might be a good place to start.
There are a lot of Vancouverite photographers around here as well. You can do a location search on the Photo Critique page, and if you want, you can check out some of my favourite local photographers: Kevin Lanthier, Kamil Wisnieski and Kim Culbert.
Thanks for the post becky, i appreciate the encouragement and insight greatly. I found your local shots refreshing... Do you have any favourite local areas to shoot?
Hi Matt - I like the experimental and enterprising way you take photographs. Don't ever stop trying new things and looking for new subjects.
This is quite a beautiful photo - the colours are great, as is the exposure. The only thing I would consider here is a composition change. I feel the line of silhouetted trees might be more effective if it was placed at the top or bottom third of the photo. Because I think the water is a bit more interesting than the sky (it has the same colour with the bonus of some debris on the water which creates a nice texture), I'd say top third. The rule of thirds doesn't always work (especially when it comes to perfect reflections), but it's a nice rule of thumb. If you're not sure, then do one of each (one in the middle, one on a third).
