Hugo, having been away for a couple of months, I didn't see your floral triptych until now. As an expert on floral pictures (and not the seed catalogue kind!) I must say that it's not your strongest kind of photography. The composition is quite good and the use of shallow DOF is something I like to do myself. But maybe you overdid it in these photo's. Most of all your lighting is not very good. I dont know if you used natural light or not, so it's difficult to advise you here. From what I read in your comments, I have the feeling you're not easily going to try it again. Well, we can't be good in everything, can we? (although we would like to!!!)

Hi Hugo! Oh... I will not leave, just slow down a bit, so you wont get rid of me! ;-)
I have just looked at you three new flower photos, and I comment this one because even if they are so similar this one is the one that I for an unknown reason like most. You composed it really beautifully, with feeling! And the combination of colours is great! I only wish it was sharper and with less light.

Hallo Hugo. This is an interesting close up however the focal length could be little bit better. Also the white looks exposed hardly. Need some impruvements, isn't it? However your try is good and surely you can make best photos!

I think you do better photos in other areas. I'm sure this is much better than I could do, though, so I don't really want to be critical! :) Carolyn

Hi Hermen, Thanks (again) for the comment and advice, very helpful. I'll try to work on the third one as far as the tonal range and I agree, #1 and #2 are overprocessed. The initial scan were my worst ever, so it required alot of work fixing it... I'll see what I can do to #3, and yes, I did focus on the stamen.
Cheers,
Hugo

Like you, I am not really into floral photography, but I'll do my best to criticise your exploration of this new field :) I think it is quite difficult to shoot flowers in an original way, that is, to take it beyond the 'seed catalog' image as Mary Bell put it. For sure, this one doesn't look as if it is coming from the seed catalog, so congratulations for that :) I think what this image (and the first one as well) is missing, is a good tonal quality: the contrast is very harsh, and the image looks over-processed. At first sight, the photo looks quite soft, as if everything is out of focus. This is not true, I think you focussed on the stamen, but due to the harsh contrast, there is only very little detail in this part. I think the composition of this one is better than the previous, I have the feeling that in image #1 the flower is too much down in the frame (also because it is pointing downwards). This one is better positioned.

hugo, there's nothing i can add that hasn't been said above. needs more focus and less saturation. i just noticed the saturation issue. it makes the scanner induced streaks more pronounced.
take care, tom

Hi Hugo, Here is a first offering you advice on photography ! Only thing I can suggest in floral macros is to decide which part you want to be in focus. The petals, leaves, stamen as the close focus and minimal DOF can be critical. I hope this helps a little as I have learned so much from you already in return !

Hi Hugo...
This is much better than the first one... But I've seem better shots than this one... The one you uploaded for Lori the other day was awesome.... with that in mind... I am completely sure you can do Macros as well as your portraits and landscapes and you're reporting picture which all of them I love...
The first one and this one look a little bit out of focus, but nevertheless I still love the angle, and the background... these enhances the image...
Continue with macros!!!!!
Cheers,
Maria

Hi Carmen, It's always a good experiment to pursue new subjects of photography, and I do find it a challenge. But the portraits and land / cityscapes will remain my main subject, don't worry....;o) I appreciate your comment,

Keep on! The flowers are wonderfull subjetc to take pictures!

Hi Mauro, thanks for your comment. I think the problem with the DOF is due to the excessive post processing, as Baki points out. I do tend to keep the DOF too shallow, and I'll keep that in mind for future attempts.
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Baki, Thanks for your advise! Very useful. I'll keep it in mind when I attempt a next floral shoot! I know exactly what I mean. You are absolutely right about the post processing, that's completely overdone. The scan was as bad as the original one I posted with the first one of this triptych. I owe you one!
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Hugo, Generally i like this shot, especially i like the contrast between background darkness and whiteness of flower.I also like the diagonal branch at the background. On the other hand the shot seems a bit out of focus and seems a bit over processed or something "overdigital" so that I think it is more in the category of abstract or digital than the floral with its current state. Better lighting and focusing with less postprocessing might be helpful.. Regards Baki
